EM Technology™ was introduced in the early 1990s in Indonesia. It has been actively promoted in the field of agriculture, animal husbandry, aquaculture, and environmental conservation. Bali Island became a center of EM dissemination. Bali is famous for EM™ Bokashi Oil, which is the traditional Indonesian oil treated with EM™, the oil is very popular among not only local people but also tourists (foreigners).



indonesia01Applying EM made the soil rich, and it also helps increase the yield of the strawberry farms.



indonesia02In poultry farms, applying EM into drinking and spraying water reduces the frequency of getting disease and facilitates their growth.



indonesia03Bokashi Therapy is to lie down the body in bokashi with heating 60-70 degrees Celsius. The bokashi is made of sawdust substances and the residue of over 2000 kinds of herbs, which is fermented through EM Technology™.

Myanmar

EM™ was started at an experimental stage in 1989 in Myanmar through the Yezin Agricultural University and the results led to the recognition of EM™ by high-ranking government officials. EM manufacturing was initiated in 1993 and although used primarily in agriculture. As of 2008, more than ha of rice paddies use EM™.



myanmar01EM™ is sprayed at the landfill in Yangon to make compost. Over 2,000 tons per year of high quality compost are produced there.



myanmar02There are five EM manufacture factories and EM™ is widely used throughout Myanmar. Central Agriculture Research and Training Center (CARTC), which contributes to the establishment of farming technology without chemical fertilizers and agrichemicals, conducts seminars for EM engineers and a variety of tests to examine how to apply EM™ more effectively.

New Zealand

New Zealand


The EM™ activities in New Zealand are spearheaded by the New Zealand Nature Farming Society (NZNFS), established in 1997. In 2002, the seventh International Nature Farming Conference was held in Christchurch with more than 200 people from 30 countries joining.



newzealand01Animal leftover parts from slaughterhouse are treated with EM™ and then are converted into rich compost with worms. When worm composting, it usually produces bad odor; however, treating with EM™ before worm composting prevents the odor problem, and reduces the cost as well.



The best example of a large scale system with EM™ compost is seen in Christchurch City. Also, not only household use but also public facilities and restaurants in Christchurch use EM™ to treat garbage so that they can make compost effectively and dispose garbage environment-friendly.



newzealand02EM™ is used on a trial base at Lincoln University, and the high-quality vegetables are harvested at an experimental plot.

Thailand

The establishment of the Saraburi Kyusei Nature Farming Center in 1988 also marked the start of EM™ propagation in Thailand and the other countries all over the world. EM™ is being applied in agriculture animal husbandry and shrimp cultivation. Similarly EM™ is used in a variety of areas such as environmental education, water treatment and rural development projects of the Thai Royal Army.



thailand01Thailand carries out Royal project called “Self-sufficient Economy”. The Royal Thai Army supports EM™ farming and gives the training activities for local people so as to achieve the national project.



thailand02The Saraburi Kyusei Nature Faming Center conducts workshops on EM Technology for Thai people regularly and for foreign people twice a year in cooperation with APNAN.

Vietnam

EM Technology™ is being disseminated in Vietnam in cooperation with the Vina-Nichi Center, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment since 1997. Recently EM™ is widely used especially for aquaculture and waste treatment.



vietnam01Vietnamese government is assured of effectiveness of EM Technology™. EM™ is sprayed at landfills so that it controls bad odor and purifies landfill leachate.



vietnam02In southern Vietnam, EM™ is applied to a large-scale of shrimp cultivation which is focused on exportation, and the high-quality shrimps are exported to the U.S. and EU countries.



vietnam03Thai Nguyen, located in northern Vietnam, is famous for tea plantation which produces high quality tea. The Province of Thai Nguyen supports the dissemination of EM Technology™ in its region and conducts a wide range of EM™ projects.

Bhutan

Bhutan

In Bhutan, the Ministry of Agriculture expressed a strong interest in the use of EM Technology™ to achieve a “Sustainable and Environmental Consevation Agriculture” and in 1994 signed a memorandum of agreement with APNAN, EMRO and INFRC, leading to the official start of the dissemination of EM™ in the country.



bhutan01Out of 500 schools including from elementary schools to high schools, more than 150 schools conduct the agricultural training project as one of the education curriculum.

Nepal

Since 1996, EM Technology™ and Kyusei Nature Farming have been disseminated in Nepal through a network of NGO’s under the leadership of Community Welfare and Development Society (CWDS). The distribution of EM™ has continued to grow under the NGO network.

nepal02Activated EM™ is used to reduce bad odor at daily product processing factory in Kathmandu and it is reported that EM™ is effective on odor problems.

Laos

In 2000, after the signing of an agreement between The Service of Agriculture and Forestry of Vientiane Municipality and EMRO/INFRC/APNAN, EM Technology™ has been promoted especially for Nature Farming.
EM™ application for organic farming

laos01EM Technology™ is mainly applied in organic farming in Laos. EM™ is used as organic compost. It is reported that a rice crop has better growth condition in EM™ Model District.


EM™ seminars and guidance

laos02The EM™ project division of Vientiane city conducts EM™ seminars and provides guidance in the fields. Vegetables grown with EM Technology™ are shipped to organic agriculture market in Vientiane.

Cambodja

EM™ promotion in Cambodia is conducted by NKA (Neary Khmer Association for Health and Vocational Training), NGO. NKA introduces EM™ to locals on the radio and in seminars, which is held in various regions.

cambodia_01cambodia_02NKA instructs and demonstrates how to use EM™ such as making Activated EM•1® and EM bokashi, and also provides information about EM™ application at its private farm. Because NKA uses radio station to promote EM activity, they have a lot of participants, even from rural areas, for EM™ seminars.

Australia

EM™ is promoted and applied to large-scale agriculture by Vital Resource Management Pty Ltd (VRM), a leading manufacture/distributor of EM™ products in Australia. A number of positive effects, with using EM™, are reported: soil improvement; reduction in use of chemical fertilizer; plants quality improvement. Also, it is reported that the soil including EM™ is effective to reduce carbon dioxide in the air; therefore, Carbon Credits business is getting started.

Sri Lanka

EM™ was experimentally introduced at the University of Peradeniya in the year 1990. Since 1997, Sarvodaya, the country’s largest NGO has been carrying the dissemination of EM Technology™.

sri01At the Model District which has been started to use EM™ since 2000, the problems of disease and pest or weeds have been rarely occurred.



sri02EM™ Technology, in Sarvodaya, is disseminated through EM™ seminars for people to know and to understand what EM™ is and how EM™ affects their faming.

Malaysia

EM Technology™ is widely applied in local plantations and water purification for river and factorial drain, and the successful cases in this application often appears in newspapers. Today, it is expected that EM is applied to household and community.
One Million Apologies to Mother EARTH

malaysia01Penang Government conducted a revitalizing rive project called “One Million Apologies to Mother EARTH” in August 2009. The objective of this project was to enhance or improve the quality of the rivers and seacoasts in Penang, which at once time was called the Pearl of the Orient, but with time had been polluted primarily due to human activities. During the event, more than one million of EM™ mud balls were thrown to the polluted rivers.



malaysia02After several weeks of the EM™ mud balls event, the effect of EM™ has been appeared; Sludge reduction was noticed. The project is planed to continue until the water quality of rivers is improved from Class 3 to Class 2 in line with Malaysian standards.

EM™ application for for oil palm plantation

malaysia03EM™ is used for oil palm plantation on a trial basis. The crop yields increased from 0.8 ton to 1.2 ton per ha. The increased earthworm and the softer soil are reported in the experimental section. Moreover, no disease has been spreading in this organic plantation.

Republik of China

In 1991, EM Technology™ is introduced and disseminated in China with the request of Nanjing Institute of Soil Science, and in 1996 EMRO CHINA, a subsidiary of EM Research Organization, Inc., is founded in Nanjing. Currently, EMRO CHINA gives technical guidance of EM™ for EM•1® manufacture in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanchang, Cuangzhou, and Linyi. EM Technology™ is now diversely applied to agriculture, aqua-culture, and livestock: Specifically, it is used in the reused water circulation system for agricultural water, river purification, refuse treatment, and organic fertilizer production.
EM™ pig farming

china01EM™ pig farm treated by a pile of sawdust is widely spread throughout the country. First, spread a pile of sawdust at the floor for height of 1m, and then bokashi and wheat bran are added with Activated EM•1® to ferment together. It has no odor and no harm on livestock. It seldom attracts flies. Moreover, there has no impact on environment because feces are decomposed with sawdust and turned into compost. Livestock has higher immune response so that no medication is needed. Currently, an EM™ model pig farm for 4 tons of livestock is under construction in ShanXi. There was bad odor throughout a town before applying EM™; however, adding EM™ into a created sedimentation and four lagoons, the COD level dropped to the level of national discharge standards (100ppm and below).


Activity of Nature Farming Promotion Association

china03Nature Farming Promotion Association of China was found by specialists in each area, who had a training seminar at International Nature Faming Research Center in 2006. They conduct Lecture by Prof. Higa, EM™ Research Briefing session, and on-site training session, and also it facilitates the technology exchange.


EM™ application for furniture and carpets

china04Furniture used at EM™ Hotel Costa Vista Okinawa is treated with EM™ in the process of manufacture in China. Guest rooms at the hotel, which was rebuilt in 2005, have much less formaldehyde level than the standard level because resin and adhesive which contain formaldehyde are treated with EM™. Not only furniture, but also mattress, feather quilt, and others are treated with EM™.
