Along with over time, people become more aware of the importance of natural products that become a necessity of everyday life. Natural products / organic food and energy in the form of a growing need for human beings in the midst of an increasingly polluted environment by various pollutants in addition to fuel prices are also higher.
It is the people put a great interest in organic food, because in the production process, the material is free from harmful chemicals. To be able to produce organic food, absolutely must use natural ingredients since the early stages of a production process. All food derived from the soil, so the soil must be free from harmful chemicals. In the process of production of organic food, organic fertilizers and pesticides needed organic whose existence is strongly influenced by a Japanese scientist named Teuro Higa.
Teuro Higa made a breakthrough in the era of modern agriculture to develop microorganisms that are useful to improve soil quality and plant growth.
Teuro Higa was born on December 28, 1941 in Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan. She began her higher education at the University of Ryukyu Department of Agriculture, and with brilliant he continued his education up to PhD level with a specialization in agricultural research (agricultural research). Doctoral programs were completed properly and holds a PhD.
In 1970 at the same university, Higa Teuro appointed as a lecturer. Career Higa continues to climb, she took a position as assistant professor in 1972. Contributions Higa in the world of organic agriculture research, he earned delivering Professor of Horticulture.
Through one of his research, Higa discovered the scientific method to improve soil quality and plant growth using a mixture of various microorganisms that are generally composed of lactic acid bacteria (lactic acid bacteria), purple bacteria and yeast (yeast). Higa named method with the technology effective microorganisms (EM) as well as a patent on his invention.
In his research, Higa stated there are about 80 mikroorganisms useful, and used for various purposes. In agriculture these microorganisms proven to improve soil fertility, increase crop yields and to control pests and diseases in plants.
In the field of animal husbandry, EM is used to feed livestock, composting and improve the health of livestock.
Society in general use EM for composting, types of EM used are EM1, Bokashi. There are at least there are 15 types of EM which have different functions. Among others, EM1, EM1 Bokashi, EM2, EM4, EM5 and Activated EM (AEM)
Teruo Higa continues to actively introduce EM on the world community. Recorded 90 countries actively utilizing EM technology, including the private sector and entrepreneurs.
Indonesia is also able to take advantage of EM technology in a unique way by integrating environmental aspects of tourism. Most of the people of Bali using EM in the production of food crops, fruits and livestock. Even some hotels in Bali use of EM in water management. This condition causes the island of Bali has been named as a pilot for EM technology.
This development is believed to cause Teuro Higa memgang important position among other, the Chief Executive Comitee for International spreading of Nature Farming, president of the Asia Pacific Natural Agriculture Network and several other positions.
Higa also wrote several books in order to spread the EM technology to the world. One of his famous book is: "Use of microorganisms in Agriculture and Their Positive Effects on Environmental Safety" (1990) and "An Earth Saving Revolution" (1993)
On once occasion at a conference in Germany, EM Festa & Conference, 9-11 September 2006 Teuro Higa said, "Everyday human activity has caused environmental pollution and economic expansion has made the environment suffer. It is therefore very important for us to respond to issues environment and do something to create a clean environment "
