Health Applications
When we talk about preventive medicine the basic key to being healthy is to strengthen your natural healing power. Therefore, we need to help return our environment (soil, water, air) to a healthy, natural state.
EM Technology™ combines the beneficial and fermentative microorganisms that exist throughout nature, and integrates the force of natural healing power and immune strength that exists in humans and the environment. We believe that when the environment becomes healthy so, too, will human beings. Combining this way of thinking with EM Technology™, we have created the concept of EM Wellness, and in order for people to actually experience this, we opened the EM Wellness Center Hotel Costa Vista Okinawa in April of 2006 in Okinawa, Japan.
There are many EM secondary products developed to promote human health. For product availablility, please consult an authorized distributor in your country.

Construction Applications
Construction Applications
Recently the issue of "Sick House Syndrome" has arisen, and there is a greater awareness of the materials used in construction. If one inhales fumes from paint, new building materials and adhesives, one can get sick. Mold and housemites are also a factor in this illness.
In the construction industry, it is possible to enhance the functionality of materials though adding EM•1® or EM-X® ceramic products. The building's durability will be improved, and in actual construction it's been shown that the damage caused by adhesives and organic solvents can be reduced. At present EM•1® and EM-X® ceramics are being used in concrete in actual construction, and numerous buildings and houses have been completed implementing the use of EM Technology™ in construction materials right from the design. The best example of this is our EM Wellness Center in Okinawa, Japan. Instead of tearing down the decrepit building, the concrete building materials were revitalized through the use of EM Technology™, and the Center itself has successfully become a leading architectural model.

Recycling Applications
Recycling Applications
Treating the variety and massive volume of waste produced by societies and human activities has become an increasingly critical issue for mankind and the global environment. In particular, currently there is no conclusive formula being used to deal with odors and production costs in garbage treatment plants (incinerators, final landfill sites, or landfills), and organic recycling composting facilities that use garbage and sewage.
Around the world, through the use of EM•1®, odors are being eliminated inside and outside of many facilities, which improves the quality of the working environment, reduces the cost of using deodorizers, disinfectants and pesticides, and reduces the amount of time needed for compost production.

Wastewater Treatment Applications
Wastewater Treatment Applications
Microorganisms are inevitable participants in the cleaning of water in nature. Even in conventional wastewater treatment methods such as the activated sludge process, the effects of microorganisms are utilized. All of us in our daily lives continue to produce pollutants, but it is through the activity of microorganisms that these pollutants are broken down and cleaned.
With the increasing pollution of water systems in recent years, it has been noted that the amount of pollution produced by humans far exceeds the cleaning capacity of nature. The spread of the use of chlorine destroys the critical microorganisms that have self-cleaning functions, a contradiction that intensifies the deterioration of the environment.
Along with increasing the diversity of microflora, EM•1® suppresses putrefaction and ferments pollutants, transforming them into materials that can be utilized by other living beings, and helps recover and reinforce the self-cleaning function within nature.

Aquaculture Applications
Aquaculture Applications
In Japan there are many volunteer organizations that are using EM•1® to help the sea regain its abundance. One aspect of this involves a reduction in sludge in order to improve water quality. In EM treated areas seaweed and fish have made a comeback, with results that help promote the aquaculture industry.
The main cause of water pollution is discharge from homes, and the vast majority of pollutants can be treated with EM•1®. If EM outnumbers putrefactive bacteria in places where these discharges flow, pollutants will ferment and break down rather than putrefy, and other microbes and plankton will utilize the materials that EM produces.
When this kind of environment is established, higher level predators increase and the energy from the pollution sources can be converted to life-enhancing energy. The desertification of the oceans has led to a depletion of aquaculture resources, and to a farming industry and the contradictions inherent in an ad hoc technology on which it is based. Through the application of EM Technology™ it is possible to arrive at a comprehensive improvement in the surrounding environment.

Livestock Applications
Livestock Applications
EM•1® has shown significant effects in reducing the odor of livestock waste and in accelerating the conversion into manure compost. In the livestock industry, animals are raised in overcrowded conditions in order to increase production, which leads to stress and to many harmful effects. However if EM•1® is sprayed in livestock pens, pollution from harmful microorganisms can be eliminated. The environment within the pens and the internal microflora of the livestock can both be improved, which in turn leads to a reduction of stress on the animals, higher quality milk, meat, eggs, and the suppression of diseases. Research has shown that EM•1® is completely safe to apply inside barns and pens, and can be mixed in the drinking water and feeds to promote overall health of the animals.

HOW EM WORKS
How EM•1® Works
There are now numerous fermented foods in the world, but most of these had their genesis in accidental discoveries. Sake was discovered when someone spit rice that had been in his mouth and later fermented, or when milk that was left in a leather bag fermented and turned into yogurt. These were not begun with any particular seed bacteria but show how beneficial microorganisms exist everywhere, in the air around us and on the surface of objects.
But the reality now is that the atmosphere dominantly contains a great deal of oxygen and oxidizing microorganisms that use oxygen to break down organic material. In most cases this oxidation results in putrefaction. Because of this, in the food processing industry, the technology of having pure beneficial bacteria, individually cultured, is highly developed.
In other environments such as soil and water, there is a higher concentration of microorganisms than in the air, and the overall situation can greatly change depending on the types of microorganisms present. For instance, in planted fields, if there are many putrefactive microorganisms, the crops will be prone to disease and there will be many injurious insects. In healthy fields, though, the crops will thrive. The difference between the two is usually stated in terms of the microflora. In any environment, living beings or microorganisms live in a balance, and depending on the type of microorganism, some will excrete substances in order to make a more favorable environment for them to live in.
In bad environments, though, what should be done to produce a breakthrough? In cases like this it is critical to transform the microflora. Increasing the number of beneficial microorganisms, such as those present in EM•1®, will change the environment.
Applying EM•1® will help revive the entire microflora. Generally 1 gram of soil will contain from a hundred million to one billion beneficial microorganisms, an amount that is not overwhelmingly large. But the microorganisms within EM•1® can take on a leadership role, and incorporate the existing microorganisms in the soil (opportunistic microorganisms) to get them to help improve the overall environment. In this context, EM•1® has an effect that goes beyond the amount applied to the soil.
In nature, the nutrition and environmental load of a water system will depend on the ecology in that particular area, and the water quality will be sustained by the functioning of a self-cleansing process. This ecology stands on an ecological pyramid with the microflora as the base, and the water is purified through the food chain of plankton, small animals, and fish that are sustained by the microflora.
However in polluted water systems, where pollution has built up and foul odors are produced, the amount of beneficial microorganisms will be reduced and putrefactive microorganisms will become dominant. Because of this, the purifying ability of the ecology will decrease, and a vicious circle will occur in which, as the nutrition and oxygen needed to sustain the ecology decrease, the ecology will be damaged even further.
Through applying EM•1®, a compound solution that has the ability to clean the environment, to this type of environment in which putrefactive microorganisms dominate, beneficial microorganisms will then dominate. As the microflora becomes more productive this will greatly change the ecological pyramid. Through this process, the natural ecology with no sludge or foul odor can be recovered.
Once beneficial microorganisms have assembled and their power has started to help a healthy environment to return, the system can be left alone and by itself it will track in a good direction. Sometimes just a single application of EM•1® is enough to create a healthy environment, while in other cases 100 applications may be needed. The difference depends on the microflora in the place where EM•1® is applied, and the condition of the surrounding environment. The point is this: in order to fully bring out the power of EM•1®, it should be applied and reapplied until a healthy environment starts to appear.
