ABSTRACT

The cultivation of tapioca liquid waste as microbiology treatment
has been investigated. Waste were cultivated by effective
microorganisms (EM) technology in the laboratorium scale.
Sample were taken from PT. Sari Bumi Swakarsa, Kabupaten
Kuantan Singingi, Riau Province and brought to the laboratorium
using two plastic containers. Sample in the first container contains
final process of liquid wastes (out let) for quality control. The
second container contains liquid wastes before processing which
treated with EM. The purpose of this research was to hasten the
decomposition processes of tapioca liquid waste using EM
technology.
The cultivation of EM used triple treatments. Two treatment were
using EM with concentration of 0.5% (A series) and 1% (B series).
Another treatment was without EM (C series). The changing of
water quality before and after treatment was compared to tapioca
liquid waste standard (KepMenLH No.51/MenLH/10/1995) in
charge of pH, BOD, COD, total suspended solid (TSS) and cyanide.
Time variables were 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 days treatment Data was
analyzed using statistic ANOVA. The effect of EM was observed
using Duncan’s test at confidence interval 95%.
The statistical analyzes of the experimental data showed that A
series and B series had BOD, COD TSS, and cyanide less than C
series (p≤0.05). The differences of EM concentrations were not
affect toward BOD, COD and TSS. B series was effectively to
decrease cyanide (p≤0.05). EM technology could be used to
cultivate tapioca liquid waste more quickly (12 days) than
industrial processes (3 months) to achieve wastewater quality
standard.
Key word: Effective microorganisms, tapioca liquid waste,
treatment.
